FAQ

What Is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern, practical approach that combines therapeutic hypnosis with solution-focused psychology and neuroscience-based understanding of how the brain responds to stress, anxiety and change. At its core, it is designed to help people move away from unhelpful patterns of thinking and towards calmer, healthier and more effective ways of responding.

Hypnosis itself is a natural state of focused attention and heightened responsiveness. It is not sleep, unconsciousness or loss of control. Most people experience it as a state of deep mental   and physical relaxation combined with unusually clear focus and awareness. You remain fully aware throughout the process.

The simplest way to think about hypnosis is this: When the conscious mind becomes quieter and less overloaded, the deeper patterns of the subconscious mind become more accessible and more open to positive change. This matters because much of human behaviour operates automatically beneath conscious awareness. Habits, emotional reactions, anxiety patterns, confidence levels, self-beliefs, fear responses, performance under pressure. Most of these are learned responses, and learned responses can change.

Solution Focused Hypnosis differs from some traditional therapeutic approaches because it spends less time repeatedly analysing problems and more time helping you build the thinking, emotional state and behavioural patterns you want moving forward.

The focus is not:

  • “What is wrong with you?”

  but rather:

  • “How do we help your mind and nervous system move towards something better?”

The process helps interrupt unhelpful automatic responses and strengthen calmer, healthier and more productive ones. Sessions typically combine:

  • solution-focused conversation
  • practical psychological insight
  • relaxation and hypnosis
  • guided visualisation
  • positive future-focused mental rehearsal

Over time, this helps people feel calmer, clearer, less overwhelmed, more confident, more emotionally resilient, and more in control of their thinking and reactions. Rather than trying to force change through willpower alone, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works by helping the brain operate from a calmer and more resourceful state, where positive change often becomes easier, more natural and more sustainable.

What does a Hypnotherapist actually do?

A Hypnotherapist helps people create positive change by working with the patterns, responses and habits that operate beneath conscious awareness. My role is not to “control” your mind or tell you who to become. It is to help you access a calmer, clearer and more resourceful mental state where meaningful change becomes easier and more natural.

In many ways, the process is closer to guided mental conditioning and focused psychological coaching than the dramatic portrayals people often associate with hypnosis. The work is collaborative. You are not “fixed” by someone else. You remain fully involved throughout the process. My role is to help guide the mind away from unhelpful automatic responses and towards calmer, healthier and more effective ones.

Why do people invest in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Many people already know logically what they should do. The difficulty is that emotional patterns, anxiety responses, habits and self-beliefs often operate automatically beneath conscious awareness. That is why willpower alone can sometimes feel exhausting or ineffective.

Hypnosis helps create a calmer and more receptive mental state where healthier patterns can begin to take hold more naturally. Rather than constantly fighting against yourself internally, the goal is to help your conscious goals and subconscious responses become more aligned.

When that happens, change often starts to feel less forced and more sustainable.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Most people who are willing to engage with the process can experience hypnosis. Hypnosis is not unusual or mysterious. In fact, we naturally move in and out of similar focused states every day:

  • becoming absorbed in a film
  • daydreaming
  • driving on autopilot
  • losing track of time while concentrating deeply

People who are imaginative and able to focus often respond particularly well.

I tried hypnosis before and it didn’t work. Why?

There are many reasons why a previous experience may not have felt effective. Often it comes down to:

  • lack of trust or rapport
  • unrealistic expectations
  • poor explanation of the process
  • or simply working with someone whose style was not the right fit for you

Good hypnotherapy is not about “doing hypnosis to someone.” It is about creating the right psychological environment for change.

Will I be asleep?

No. Although hypnosis is deeply relaxing, you remain aware throughout the process. Most clients describe it as a state of focused calm rather than sleep. You will hear what is being said, remain aware of your surroundings and stay fully capable of speaking, moving or stopping the session at any point.

Can someone get stuck in hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is simply a temporary state of focused attention and relaxation. You can come out of hypnosis whenever you choose, and the state naturally passes even without formal guidance.

Will I lose control or reveal personal secrets?

Absolutely not. You cannot be made to do, say or accept anything that conflicts with your values, beliefs or wishes. Therapeutic hypnosis is not mind control. You remain fully capable of making decisions and rejecting anything that does not feel right to you.

Will I remember the session afterwards?

Most people remember most, if not all the experience. Some parts may feel dreamlike or deeply relaxed, but you do not become unconscious or lose awareness.

Are there negative side effects?

Most people experience hypnosis as deeply calming, positive and mentally refreshing. The process is designed to leave you feeling relaxed, grounded and emotionally steadier at the end of the session.

What kinds of issues can hypnosis help with?

People seek hypnotherapy support for many different reasons, including:

  • anxiety and overthinking
  • stress management
  • fears and phobias
  • confidence and self-esteem
  • public speaking
  • performance under pressure
  • procrastination
  • habit change
  • motivation and focus
  • emotional resilience
  • sleep issues
  • behavioural patterns and self-sabotage

I also work with professionals, founders, performers and high achievers who want to improve calmness, clarity, confidence and consistency under pressure.

Why does hypnosis work so effectively for some people?

Much of human behaviour is automatic. Even when we consciously want to change, older emotional patterns and conditioned responses can continue operating beneath awareness. Hypnosis helps create a calmer and more receptive state where the brain becomes more open to building new associations, perspectives and behavioural responses. The goal is not to “erase” who you are. It is to help you move away from unhelpful patterns and towards calmer, healthier and more effective ways of thinking, feeling and responding.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The average would be 6-12 sessions, but there is no fixed answer to this because every person, every mind and every situation is different. The number of sessions depends on:

  • the nature of the issue
  • how long it has been present
  • the level of stress or anxiety involved
  • how your mind responds to the process
  • and your own willingness to engage with the work between sessions

Some people experience meaningful change quite quickly. Others prefer a slower, steadier process with ongoing support and reinforcement over time. My approach is always to help you create positive change in the minimum number of sessions realistically needed — not to keep people in therapy unnecessarily. That said, you are ultimately the best judge of your own progress.

You know when you begin to feel calmer, clearer, more confident and more in control of your thinking and emotional responses.

As a very general guide:

  • some clients feel significant benefit within 3–4 sessions
  • fears and phobias often respond well within 4-5 sessions
  • longer-standing anxiety patterns, chronic stress or low mood may require a longer course of work
  • stop smoking or vaping sessions are usually delivered as a longer intensive session

The process is always tailored to you rather than forced into a rigid programme.

How Often Will Sessions Take Place?

For most people, weekly sessions work best initially because consistency helps reinforce new patterns of thinking and emotional response. As progress develops, some clients choose to:

  • move to bi-weekly sessions
  • schedule occasional maintenance sessions
  • or return only when they feel additional support would be helpful

There are no rigid rules. The work is collaborative and flexible, designed around your needs and goals.
